Giving back

GOOD MORNING!

When I answered the phone, and the caller identified herself in that frail, old lady voice, as Doris, a volunteer from the March of Dimes, I was sunk. I have an incredible weakness when elderly people ask for help, and just say yes out of my weird guilt just for being younger than they are, and reverence for the ability to not be hit by a Mack truck before the age of 70.

Doris broke my heart with her fervent support for the March of Dimes. (On a side note car dealerships would be a much more pleasant place if Doris was advising you on your car purchase, instead of slick Willy pushing the fancy red car on you, just because you're female--again another post for another day. If you're running a car dealership...that's some valuable advice right there.)

Okay, back on point. Doris asked me if I could give a couple hours to write out notes to my neighbors and ask for help for the March of Dimes. "Well, why not?" I said. Nobody can argue with this cause.

A week later this handy little kit showed up in the mail, and today I finally unwrapped it and got to it.

The March of Dimes--Mother's March Volunteer Kit

To my surprise, it only took an hour, and I learned the names of my neighbors. That's a win-win. (I hate the term win-win, so cheesy, but so is plus-plus and value add, so deal with it.) So, my neighbors will now know my name and associate me with helping babies, even it is by asking them for money. I am pretty sure this will at least get me a Christmas Card or a plate of cookies.

Truly, it was all ready to go, address labels and all. Now, I will be truly surprised if people mail the funds back, but we shall see. This is a noble pursuit and while, I'm not Doris, you don't get what you don't ask for, and at least I asked. So, a little elbow grease letter and some stamps, I'm done. Seriously, only took an hour and as a result I feel like a gave a little back in this increasingly selfish world. All from the comfort of my home at the kitchen table.

All  to help fund the Mother's March for the March of Dimes to fight premature birth-- and help families deliver healthier, happier babies. I really like this organization. More than 75% of gifts go to programs and helps fund groundbreaking research.
