Coffee, coffee, coffee, coffee.....Guns?

Ahhhhh.......sweet caffeinated nectar of the gods. I love coffee. Real coffee. American OK, actually Swedish coffee. For my hard earned pennies I'm a Gevalia drinker, and no I don't go in for the French Press, that's just too much work. Nor, will I stoop the instant coffee granules, though I have fond memories of my Grandpa mixing up his instant Maxwell House cup by steaming cup. I can't help myself, love the auto drip 10 cup coffee makers, too. As I'm writing this little soliloquy to the best breakfast beverage ever, I am thinking about Starbucks.

I love lattes, frappes, and the like. However, that's not why I'm thinking about this Washington state-based bastion of liquid caffeine purveyance. Nope. It's the fact that an anti-gun group is promoting skipping Starbucks today to protest their tolerance of concealed carry in states, where it's legal to do so. And, I say good for Starbucks.

Just last night, my sister-in-law was retelling the story of a prison escapee in Southern Iowa, that broke into a couples home and held them hostage overnight. Long story, short. The husband was able to shoot their captor because he had a gun in the home. That's just one story from this week. And gun control is a very personal topic.

I grew up with a family that handled guns with respect. I knew from a very young age that a gun was a tool for hunting and that death could be rendered with a single shot (if you are a good shot and target prey correctly). I have only learned the joy of shooting trap and target shooting as an adult. It's an expensive hobby, but well worth it. As a country girl, I have shot two animals in my entire life, and both were mercy kills. One was a poor rabid fox and another a white-tailed doe that had misjudged her jump over a fence, tangling in the barbed wire and breaking a hind leg. But, you better believe I know how to handle a gun safely and have great respect for all firearms.

We, as Americans, have experienced far too many tragedies at the hands of mad men with guns. But, those that are hell bent on destruction will find other tools if you take guns away. The answer to preserving precious life does not lie in more regulations and laws, but in enforcing the ones that already exist. Removing the right to bear arms is an infringement of our Constitutional Rights, instead let's focus on keeping guns out of the hands of criminals and the mentally ill.

Now, who wants to join me at Starbucks?
